McGrath Cup: UCC book final spot
January 23, 2010
UCC 1-12
Cork IT 1-10
UCC will face either Kerry or Tipperary in the McGrath Cup final following this hard-earned win over Sigerson Cup rivals Cork IT yesterday.
The victory at CIT's grounds means that UCC will have two outings next week with a Sigerson Cup opener against DIT on Wednesday being followed by the McGrath Cup decider the following Sunday.
Sigerson Cup holders CIT started brightly and led by 0-3 to 0-1 after 15 minutes, but UCC replied with five unanswered points to lead by 0-6 to 0-3 four minutes before the break. But a goal from Paul Kerrigan, after Barry John Walsh's initial effort had been saved, had the home side 1-5 to 0-7 in front at the break.
Points from Daniel Goulding and Gary Sayers extended CIT's advantage to 1-8 to 0-8 early in the second half, but a fisted goal from John Buckley brought UCC back into it and they outscored their rivals by 0-4 to 0-2 in the time remaining to seal their final place.
