O'Donovan Rossa club notes

January 20, 2010
Five O'Donovan Rossa footballers were selected on the Carbery All- Star football team at the Buckley Financial Awards held in the Maritime Hotel last Saturday evening. Kevin O'Dwyer, John Evans, Anthony Davis, Don Davis and Mick McCarthy were honoured for their football prowess in the famed red jerseys of Cork and Skibb throughout their illustrious careers. Indeed their names will forever be etched in Rossa folklore for the prominent roles they played in propelling their club to senior football ccounty glory in 1992, and All-Ireland success in 1993. The junior C footballers who annexed a sensational league and championship double in a glorious season last year, have been rewarded for their unique achievements with promotion to the junior B grade this year. This represents worthy recognition of their achievements last season from the South-West Board and is a fitting tribute to the players and coaches for their continued progression and development. This promotion represents significant progress in the club and whilst the B grade will pose a formidable challenge, the players will be keen to showcase their undoubted talents on a higher platform once more. The annual club dinner dance which was an overwhelming success last year has been confirmed for this Saturday, January 23, 2010, in the West Cork Hotel, starting at 8pm. Tickets are currently available for purchase from the following dinner dance committe members Ann Collins (086-8297206) and Moira Cahalane (028-21161). Tickets for this prestigious annual event on the Rossa social calendar are selling very quickly once again this year and supporters are urged to purchase their dinner dance tickets as soon as possible in order to avoid disappointment. All supporters who have ordered tickets thus far are requested to collect them in Cahalane's Bar at their convenience. The junior 3 footballers who enjoyed a tremendous season culminating in a league and championship double will be presented with their medals on the night by a very prominent inter-county footballer who has annexed numerous accolades in a trophy-laden sporting career. His vast array of medals include four All-Ireland championships, four Munster titles, three league titles, two All-Star awards and a Texaco footballer of the year award making him one of the decorated players currently plying his trade on the inter-county scene. Tickets for this prestigious event are priced at e35 for what promises to be a most enjoyable and celebratory night. Live music and disco will once again be provided by renowned Kerry group UÌ Bhrian. Membership which is mandatory for all players at every grade for the coming year is being collected at present. The fees for the year are: E50 for family membership, E30 individual and E15 for students and OAPs. The draw for the first round of the Tadgh Crowley Cup will be held on Tuesday, January 26, in P·irc UÌ Chaoimh, at the first County Board meeting of year. The first round ties are scheduled to be played on the weekend of February 6/7. Colin Crowley was selected at full forward on the CIT football team which defeated last season's Munster finalists Limerick in the first round of the McGrath cup played last Sunday, in Foynes. On Tuesday night, Colin represented CIT in a challenge game against Cork as they continue their preparations for the defence of their Sigerson Cup. Paudie Crowley continues to train with the Cork football Vocational Squad as they continue to prepare intensely for their impending All- Ireland semi-final clash against the Leinster champions. There was no winner of the lotto draw which took place in Annie May's Bar, last Monday night for e5,500. The numbers drawn were 8, 12, 14 and 17. The consolation prize winner was Breda Hourihane. Next week's lotto draw will be held in Cahalane's Bar and will have a jackpot of e5,750. John Bohane, Secretary O'Donovan Rossa
