A 29-man brawl marred this evening's Clare SHC encounter between Newmarket-on-Fergus and Tulla at Cusack Park.
The game was entering its final 10 minutes when the row broke out. When order was eventually restored, a player from each team was given their marching orders. With county star Colin Ryan in fine scoring form, Newmarket prevailed on a 1-17 to 0-13 scoreline to progress to the quarter-finals.
Holders Cratloe, last year's runners-up Crusheen and Kilmaley have also made it through to the last eight following wins in the weekend's other backdoor games. Cratloe withstood a late rally from O'Callaghan's Mills to win 3-19 to 3-14, Crusheen accounted for Eire Og 1-17 to 0-16, while Kilmaley trumped local rivals Inagh-Kilnamona 1-20 to 1-14 yesterday evening.
The other teams in tomorrow night's quarter-final draw will be Sixmilebridge, Clooney-Quin, Ballyea and Clonlara.
