Fr. Manning Cup heads to Breffni

February 28, 2004
Cavan claimed their fourteenth Fr Manning Cup success following their 3-7 to 1-4 win over Longford at Pearse Park in August. It was the first win in the u16 competition since 2002 and the side s later qualification of the final of the Gerry Reilly Tournament, showed what a talented bunch this present group are. Finbar Jordan and Cian Mackey opened the scoring for the Blues who had qualified for the final after a win over Roscommon in the penultimate round. Both sides missed a number of chances before Raymond Galligan shot to the Longford net following good work by Mackey and Ray Cullivan. Longford hit back immediately with a goal of their own but Enda Gaffney responded with a point to leave the eventual winners three points to the good before the home side tagged on two late points to leave then trailing by just 1-2 to 1-3 at the interval. After just seven-minutes of the second half Dame Fortune smiled on Killian Lynch when his goal bound effort deflected off a Longford defender and found its way to the net. Shane Reilly followed up with a point before Longford scored two neat points through substitute Eugene Clarke to reduce the deficit to a goal. Reilly scored his second consecutive points before Gaffney had a goal disallowed. Reilly again and Killian Lynch pointed to extent the lead to six points and Lynch finished off the scoring with his county s third goal.
