Cavan GAA await world record confirmation

June 25, 2009
Members of Cavan GAA are waiting to find out whether or not their attempt at breaking the world record for the most amount of people to run 100 metres continuously over 12 hours will be passed by the Guinness Book of World Records. On Saturday last, 1,986 people volunteered in running the 100-metre course lined-out on the training track at Kingspan Breffni Park from 9.30am to 9.30pm, breaking the previous record of 1,675, while also helping to raise around 25,000 euro for coaching games in Cavan, the Marie Keating foundation and the diabetes trust fund at Cavan General Hospital. Those who ran were both young and old alike, and highlights included the appearance of Olympian Catherina McKiernan and the Cavan senior football squad, who took time out from their preparations for this Saturday's Ulster SFC semi-final with Antrim to run the distance. Now, all that waits is confirmation after the well-organised event - spearheaded by Cavan coaching and games committee members Enda Mulvaney and Nicholas Walsh - looks to come off without a hitch. "At the moment we are compiling all the things that we need to send (to Guinness)," Cavan midfielder Walsh explained. "They have to receive a registration bookletan engineer has to certify the site to make sure it was 100 metre long. There are just a couple of wee dos and don'ts that we have to get through before we can actually get it ratified, but hopefully within the next fortnight we'll have official recognition of it."
