Cootehill Celtic Club Notes

June 24, 2009
Who Wants to be a Thousandaire The Club's main fundraiser for the year took place last Friday in the Errigal Hotel, Cootehill and what a rip roaring success it was!! Not only did the "Who Wants to be a Thousandaire" night proved to be a great success in raising funds; it really was one of the best night's entertainment in the town so far in the year. No one took home the top prize of 1000 but Neil Kelly, playing for his wife Joanne, was closest coming home with a tidy sum of 500. Congratulations and great thanks must go to the organising committee and to all who were involved and worked so hard over the past couple of months to make the night such a success. The Club who also like to thank our 8 main sponsors once again: Cootehill Credit Union; Hayes Expert; McCauley Construction; McCrystal's Pharmacy; McGahan & co. Chartered Accountants; McMullen Oils; O'Hanlon Property and Sony. Also much thanks to all our other sponsors on the night - over 120 of them and to all who bought tickets and came on the night and as well to everyone out in the Errigal Hotel Juniors The Junior team finally got their season up and running with a deserved and none too flattering 6 point victory over a strong Redhills side. Rooted to the bottom of Division 5, the boys needed to get a win to start any sort of a charge up the league table and that hunger all over the field ended up being the difference between the two sides. Despite the visitors opening the scoring, points from Ciaran Fox (2), John Grogan, Neil Kelly (2) and Barry Dempsey gave the boys a 6 points to 3 half time lead. Redhills came out strong after the break and eventually closed the gap to a single score but Cootehill were determined not to be caught and a flurry of points - Fox, Kelly, Stevie O'Connor and Kevin McCluskey among the scorers - from the Celts brought a bit of daylight between the sides again. Redhills needed a goal to bring them back into it but it was Cootehill who raised the green flag with John Grogan slipping in past the defence to score from close range opening up a commanding lead. Redhills did get a goal towards the end but Barry Dempsey cancelled it out almost immediately when his left footed strike found the net. Cootehill closed out the remainder of the game to ensure a 6 point winning margin and their first league points of the year. Team: Ciaran Boyle; Aidan McCabe, Jason O'Connor, Paul O'Loughlin; Ray McCaul, Christopher Sherlock, John Deery; Ciaran Fox, Brian Sherlock; John Grogan, Barry Dempsey, Stevie O'Connor; Mickey Lynch, Gary McCrudden, Kevin McCluskey. Subs: Neil Kelly; Sean Fitzpatrick. Unfortunately that result didn't see the boys get off the bottom of the table but it certainly closed the gap and another win in their next game - this Wednesday against Bailieboro at home at 8 pm would really pushed them up the table so once again all your support is needed and appreciated! . Juveniles The Under 12s played their Shield semi final last Sunday night and went down narrowly to Cuchulainns by 6 points on a score of 4 - 10 to 3 - 7. It really was a top class performance for the boys and girls and they were very unlucky not to get anything from the game. Considering the same side beat Cootehill by nearly 30 points nearly 3 months ago, Sunday's result shows how much the team have improved so a lot of credit must go to Manager Johnny Sherlock. Team: Cillian Delaney; Gearóid McDonald, Niall Finnegan; Kielan McCarville, Mickey O'Neill, James Costin; Sean O'Connor, Dylan Sherlock; Lee Sherlock, Evan Argue, Shane Sexton; Ellie Hayes, Tomás Smith. Subs: Cillian McGahan; Naoise Hughes Training continues for the Under 12s in preparation for the Under 12 Blitzes which are starting in the next couple of weeks. The Under 14s qualified for the Regional finals of the County 7 a side competition with a win over St. Finbarrs and a draw with Drumgoon in the semi final last Thursday ensuring their place. The Regional Final will take place this Thursday in Bailieboro with Cootehill in action from 7 p.m. All support is welcomed!! The Under 10s and Under 8s played a challenge against Bailieboro at home last Saturday. It was a good chance for everyone to get plenty of time on the field as there were no subs. Everyone seemed to enjoy the games and Cootehill will travel to Bailieboro in the near future to return the fixture. In the meantime training will continue on Saturdays at 10 am in the pitch. To find out more - Keep coming to training! The Under 16 and Minors will start up again in the next week - Management will be in touch shortly.
