Murphy era comes to abrupt end
June 19, 2008
Long serving Carlow hurler Des Murphy has been sensationally axed from the county squad for playing in a club match against the direct orders of Jim Greene and his management team.
Murphy has been a loyal servant to the Barrowsiders for almost 15 years during which period he won an All-Ireland B medal and the Kehoe Cup with the county, while he has also acquired ten Carlow SHC medals during a distinguished career with his club Naomh Eoin.
However, his inter county career has been abruptly ended following his decision to play for the club in a challenge match against Wexford side Bunclody.
The experienced forward believes he was right to play the match as he wasn't getting enough games, although he holds no animosity towards Greene.
"Jim has a job to do. He has to draw a line in the sand somewhere and that is where he drew it with me. He said that I had played a practice match when I wasn't supposed too," said Murphy.
"I asked him was I in or out and he said, out. I said okay Jim, at least I know where I stand and I wished him all the best. I am sorry it has gone to this. I would love to have finished my career in a different way."
