St Mullins GAA club notes

June 12, 2008
The club would like to extend sympathy to the Lawlor family Ballybeg on their recent bereavement. Last Friday the senior hurlers took part in round three of the Senior Hurling Championship against Carlow Town in McGrath Park Bagenalstown. St Mullins were very wary of their opponents having lost the corresponding fixture the previous year. Carlow Town started the better running into a four points to one lead with the point coming from John Doran. St Mullins then began to find their way a bit better with a point each from Declan Murphy and Jack Kavanagh. Points were then exchanged right up to half time with St Mullins lucky to be going ahead by a point. The half time score was 0-7 to 0-6. Carlow Town began once again with the first point of the half to level the game before John Murphy put us back in front with another point. St Mullins' nerves seemed to disappear when Sean Gahan finished a ball to the net. Further points followed from Seamus Murphy and John Doran scoring a 65. Carlow Town scored one more point which was to be their last of the game. St Mullins responded to this with a Cian Doyle goal and a Patrick Walsh point before Jack Kavanagh wrapped up the scoring with another goal to leave the final score 3-11 to 0-8. Team: Mark Ryan, Thomas Coady, Tom Doyle, Darren Whelan, Cathal Ryan, Paul Kehoe, Michael Kehoe, Michael Nolan, John Murphy 0-1, Patrick Walsh 0-1, John Doran 0-4(0-2 65, 0-1 free), Declan Murphy0-2, Jack Kavanagh1-2 (0-1 frees), Seamus Murphy0-1, Sean Gahan 1-0. Subs: Cian Doyle 1-0 for Declan Murphy. This was a valuable two points as five teams are now level on the top of the league with four points There will be a break in the championship for up to two months now but the All County League is due to begin in the next two weeks. St Mullins played Lisdowney in the final group game of the Kilkenny League. This was an important tie as the winners would progress to the quarter final. St Mullins were without their county players and were short others due to exams and injury. They were still able to put out a strong team but the lack of a regular freetaker was evident as they failed to convert many scoreable frees. Excellent performances in defence from Darren Whelan, Thomas Coady and Cathal Ryan and James Coady converting to the forwards were not enough to secure victory as they ran out losers 0-10 to 0-9. Team: Pat Fenlon, Stephen Barron, Tom Doyle, Darren Whelan, Thomas Coady, Cathal Ryan 0-1 (65), Michael Kehoe, Michael Nolan, John Murphy 0-1, Patrick Walsh 0-1, James Coady 0-2, Declan Murphy 0-1, Cian Doyle 0-1, Sean Gahan 0-1, John Walsh 0-1. Subs: Richard Deegan for Cian Doyle, John Murphy for Stephen Barron, Edward Kennedy for Richard Deegan and Ciara O'Shea for Michael Nolan. St Mullins now go into the Cahill Cup with all runners up in the groups. Paddy Doyle from Aughnaglear won ?1,750 and Mrs Annie Doyle from Ballyleigh won ?150 in the last County Development Draw. Fixtures for the coming week: Intermediate Championship v Palatine on Friday at 7.45 in McGrath Park Bagenalstown (This may be changed to a later date).
