SFC and SHC Previews
June 06, 2008
This weekend sees more fixtures taking place in the Carlow Senior Football Championship and Senior Hurling Championship with plenty of action in store. Here we take a look at where things could be won and lost in what is sure to be a pivotal weekend of Championship hurling and football in the county.
SFC
St Mullins v Carlow Town
These two sides meet on Friday evening at 7.45pm in Bagenalstown with Carlow Town looking to pull off the same upset they did last year in the corresponding fixture.
No doubt, St Mullins will be better geared up for their meeting with the county town side when the two sides clash this weekend.
Pat Murphy's side looked to be sharp in the year's opening round when they overcame defending champions Mount Leinster Rangers, however things could be in danger of taking a turn for the worst after they went down to 13-man Naomh Brid.
On paper, St Mullins' young side should possess to much for Murphy's men but will be wary of another upset in Bagenalstown.
St Mullins will be looking to their Under 21 stars in Darren Whelan, Patrick Walsh and John Doran, while Carlow Town will be hoping Liam Kenny, Karol English and Ruairi Dubar can help cause another shock.
SHC
Naomh Eoin v Erin's Own
The first of a double-bill starting at 5pm in Dr Cullen Park with Naomh Eoin going in as favourites to take victory.
Erin Own's will be looking to make an impression in this year's Championship and if they are to do so a win this Saturday in Dr Cullen Park would certainly turn a few heads in Carlow hurling circles.
The Town side last defeated Naomh Eoin on the back of a junior provincial triumph but since then Erin's Own have struggled to jump the quarter-final hurdle.
Last year saw Naomh Eoin fail to secure a semi-final spot for the first time in 30 years, which should surely be enough to motivate Michael Dempsey's troops to garb another two points here which would all but ensure a place in the last four.
Ballinkillen v Naomh Brid
The second part of Saturday's double-bill in Dr Cullen Park sees Ballinkillen meet Naomh Brid at 6.30pm.
Naomh Brid were disappointing against Naomh Eoin in their firs outing of the year, but redeemed themselves somewhat when they defeated St Mullins in their second match.
Ace scorer Brendan Lawlor will be suspended for this clash after receiving a red card in the last outing and will be a huge loss to Eoin Garvey's side. Martin Keating is also to miss out, therefore others on the team will need to up their performances to make up for the lost duo and make sure no upsets are caused here.
