Fitzpatrick boost for Carlow hurlers

February 20, 2010
Carlow's senior hurlers have been handed a major boost with the news that Gerry Fitzpatrick is to join the team's backroom team.

Fitzpatrick, who had been apart of Davy Fitzgerald's management team in Waterford up until this year, is a renowned fitness expert, a sports psychology lecturer in Waterford IT and was regarded as one of Ireland's leading basketball coaches when he was in charge of the Irish women's senior team.

After Justin McCarthy's forced departure from the helm at Waterford two years ago, the players had insisted that Fitzpatrick stay and he did to work under Davy Fitzgerald, who guided the Deise men to an All-Ireland final in his first year in charge.

His appointment will be seen as a major coup being pulled off by Carlow manager Kevin Ryan, who has been keen to improve the team since their place was confirmed in the Liam McCarthy Cup for this summer.
