Spring League Camogie Report

June 15, 2015

The Spring League Division 2 plate final was played in Greenford on Saturday  between Green Isle and Tara Rovers in what was a fantastic game for the spectators. Green Isle settled early and built up a good lead in the first half through some great interplay resulting in a goal from midfielder Ursula Murphy and points from Christine O'Neill, Lucy Conway and Catriona O'Brien. Tara full forward Denise Gilligan, who was outstanding all day, replied with two consecutive points from play. Green Isle forwards Tracey Moloney and Aisling Hogan were given little opportunity on goal as Tara's goalie Fiona O Grady cleared quickly off both sides. Gilligan scored a point from a free just before the break and Helen Murphy dominated the Tara back line not allowing the girls in green to score in the last 10 minutes of the half.  A super save by goalkeeper Ann McGivern helped Green Isle go in at half time leading 1-5 to 0-3.

Tara came back strong in the second half with two fantastic goals from Gilligan in the first five minutes which put them in the lead for the first time. The west Londoners were like a different team in the second half with their work rate being phenomenal. Helen Muprgy pointed from Centre back to extend the lead for the Taras and there was great persistence seen by Joni Traynor and Roisin O Grady in mid field to keep the ball in their own half. Green Isle some how found their way through the Tara defence and responded to gradually closed the gap. This was through a goal from Christine O'Neill and determined defensive play from the backs, Claire Kelly, Catriona O'Regan and Suzanne White and midfield, including some great  blocks from midfielders Ciara Power and Ursula Murphy. Green Isles Captain Sinead O'Halloran worked tirelessly to sweep up loose ball in the half back line and fire the ball back up to the forwards, keeping the pressure on Tara, while manager Aidan Power sent on Anne-marie Ballantyne as a sub to refresh the Green Isle attack. Another point from Gilligan who was given the ball by Tara full back Ann Gleeson saw the sides level with 1 minute remaining.

With both teams working tirelessly to covert scores it was  Christine O'Neill for Green Isles who slotted over a point from a free to give Green Isle the lead. Lucy Conway got in a massive block on Emer Kelly, who was looking to level the sides again in the final pixel, to halt Tara's comeback and seal the win for Green Isle. With John Mitchells winning the division 1 final against Fullen Gaels, the amalgamated league saw two junior teams lift the silverware. This is a great achievement for both teams and will guarantee both teams will be gunning to compete in the Senior Championship next year.
