Blog: does hurling need another tier?

After three woefully one-sided provincial semi-finals this weekend, the question has to be asked: does hurling need another tier?

We've already got the Liam MacCarthy, Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher Cups, but such is the gulf that now exists between the top three or four teams and the rest in the Liam MacCarthy, perhaps there is room for another tier.

At a time when there have been numerous calls for a restructuring of the football championship, expect to hear similar calls for the hurling championship over the next few days.

If you're a Laois, Wexford or Limerick supporter, the statistics make grim reading. Between them, Galway, Kilkenny and Tipperary racked up 12-76 and won by an aggregate of 60 points.

For Wexford, who travelled to Nowlan Park with genuine hopes of causing an upset, their 24-point defeat was their heaviest to Kilkenny in the championship since 1931.

Maybe it's too soon to be reaching for the panic button and Laois, Wexford and Limerick will redeem themselves in the All-Ireland qualifiers. But one-sided games like what we saw today and yesterday are of no benefit to anyone.
