The dreaded red card

An umpire at an IFC club game in Wexford has demanded action after a player who he alleges assaulted him during the game had his red card rescinded.

Peter Shannon was acting as umpire at the HWH-Bunclody v. Kilmore clash when a HWH player, Aidan Nolan is alleged to have pushed the official to the ground.

There were a number of incidents during the game, which was overshadowed by the fact that the official referee never turned up for the encounter and a linesman had to take over.

The Wexford Disciplinary Committee overturned the red card that Nolan received, but Shannon is not letting go and he revealed to the Wexford People that he was not told about the meeting or asked for his version of events.

"The first I knew of the meeting was later in the week. I was not informed of the meeting and not invited to attend. It's quite obvious, even as a match official and a referee, that I'm not receiving any support from this committee.

"I was assaulted in the incident but the committee must have deemed me not creditworthy to give evidence, I am not prepared to let the matter lie. I will be sending a letter this week to Wexford GAA Board seeking a full inquiry into the incident and how the decision has arrived."
