Leinster MFC: Carlow goals sink Wexford
May 03, 2012
Carlow 2-11
Wexford 0-9
Goals from Shane Webb and Ronan O'Brien in the 21st and 22nd minutes helped Carlow to a comfortable victory over Wexford in last night's Leinster MFC losers' group replay at Dr Cullen Park.
Extra-time had failed to separate the sides seven days earlier, but this time there was no doubting the home side's superiority. Sean Dempsey's charges signalled their intent by opening up a 0-3 to 0-1 lead inside five minutes. Niall Quinlan hit two frees and Chris Blake was also on target with Donal Shanley replying for Wexford.
The visitors then took control by scoring six unanswered points in a 15-minutes spell with Shanley, Kevin O'Connor and Edward O'Byrne all raising white flags to give them a 0-7 to 0-3 lead after 20 minutes. But just when it seemed they were losing their way, Carlow replied with quick-fire goals from Webb and O'Brien to lead 2-6 to 0-7 at the interval.
Wexford never recovered from that double blow and Carlow were well on their way to a meeting with Westmeath next Wednesday after scores from Quinlan and Fiach O'Toole extended their advantage on the restart.
