Leinster MFC: Shanley free rescues Wexford
April 26, 2012
Wexford 2-12
Carlow 2-12 aet
Wexford and Carlow must meet again in the Leinster MFC losers' group after extra-time failed to separate them at Horeswood last night.
Donal Shanley was the Wexford saviour after he pointed a 40-metre free two minutes from the end of extra-time to force a replay. It was close throughout with the sides going into the interval level on 1-4 to 0-7 - the Wexford goal coming from Kevin O'Connor in the 21st minute. At the other end, Niall Quinlan and Shane McGrath led the way for Carlow.
The home made a dream start to the second half when midfielder Paudie Barden netted within a minute of the restart. McGrath replied with a goal for the Sean Dempsey-managed Barrowsiders but Wexford looked set to prevail when leading 2-10 to 1-10 in injury-time. But a goal from substitute Diarmuid Walsh forced extra-time.
Carlow, who suffered a heavy defeat to Dublin in the first round proper, edged ahead in extra-time thanks to points from Niall Quinlan and Diarmuid Walsh before Shanley saved the day for the Model men.
With Westmeath awaiting the winners next Wednesday night, the replay is expected to take place this weekend.
