All Ireland title for Derry camogs
April 25, 2012
Derry camogie was given an almighty boost last Saturday afternoon when the Oakleaf camogie minors claimed the All Ireland B title outscoring Wexford by eleven points at Blakestown.
Derry 2-16
Wexford 2-5
Wexford started the brightest and before the second minute they were ahead 2-0 to 0-0 with scores from Jackie Quigley and Oulart The Ballagh's Aideen Brennan.
However, that was as good as it got for the Blue and Yellow as the Northern girls soon picked up the running. Bronagh McGillion got Derry on the 'board before Mairead McNicholl's long delivery found its way to the Wexford net to leave them in front.
Derry simply controlled the remainder of the opening half and led by ten points when the half time whistle sounded - 1-9 to 0-2.
After the resumption, McGillion resumed Derry's dominance with a '45 but Wexford got just what they needed when Shauna Sinnot found the net and soon after it looked like the spectators had a real game on their hands when Hayley Cahill got their second goal after a mix up in the Derry goal. 1-12 to 2-3.
But it was not to be, a Rosanna McAleese goal 10 minutes from the end looked to have put Derry on their way. Quigley got two fine scores for Wexford late on but it was only consolation as Derry ran out convincing winners.
