Wexford GAA tightens its purse strings

March 05, 2010
A prudent Wexford County Board is slashing its expenditure on preparing senior county teams.

In a move to tighten its belt dramatically in keeping with the financial difficulties Ireland is facing, strict monthly budgets have been drawn up and the drastic cuts have been accepted by the teams concerned.

As of 2010, the same budget will be allocated to the county footballers and hurlers. This will mean expenditure on the hurlers is reduced by about 50% from 2009, while output on the footballers falls by a massive 70% approximately.

County chairman Ger Doyle explains: "At the start of the year we looked at our budgets and looked at what our expenses were last year. We looked at all our financial outgoings, particularly at our expenses in relation to county teams, all of whom will be treated equally.

"Given the times we are in, we have to be prudent with our money. Everything has to be looked at as we are in a different world right now.

"We have entered an agreement with the players and management. We will now move forward on this and everyone is happy to move on. We have broad agreement with it.

"There are still a few areas to be dotted and crossed, but the players understand our predicament and have moved in behind us."
