NHL 2: Model men march on

February 28, 2010
Wexford inflicted a 14-point defeat on 14-man Down at Wexford Park (2-23 to 1-12).

This was a second successive defeat for the Ardsmen, who must be sick of long journeys south, having now trekked fruitlessly around the country on successive weekends.

Wexford, in contrast, remain on course for promotion, sharing top spot in Division Two with Clare and Antrim after two rounds of games.

The losers started encouragingly with a 12th-minute Gareth Johnston penalty and the sides were level on 1-4 apiece, with Thomas Watters notching the Wexford goal in the first minute.

The hosts bagged ten of the next eleven points in a devastating second-quarter display, however, to lead by 1-14 to 1-5 at the break.

Johnston's second penalty of the afternoon had been saved as the game slipped away from the northerners.

Conor Woods was sent off for the visitors early in the second half and Wexford quickly added a second goal courtesy of Jim Berry.

Diarmuid Lyng put in a good day's work with 0-12, while Gerard Monan's men had nice contributions from Paul Keith, Jim McCusker and Brendan Ennis.
