NFL 3: Model edge first win
February 14, 2010
Wexford 1-14
Offaly 2-10
Wexford fended off a gallant comeback from Offaly to register a first win in their Division Three NFL campaign at Wexford Park yesterday afternoon.
The hosts looked to be well on their way to victory when they lead by seven points with five minutes remaining, but some superb scoring from Offaly in the closing stages, which included an Alan Lyons goal, saw the sides only finish with a point between them come the full-time whistle.
It wasn't the first time that the hosts would let a comfortable lead slip either. After 17 minutes of this encounter they led by 1-3 to 0-1, with Adrian Flynn tucking away the goal, but a major from David Egan nine minutes later and a Niall McNamee free had the sides level on 1-3 each.
Wexford responded through points from Paddy Bryne and Brian Malone to take in a two-point lead at the break and built on their advantage after the restart through the faultless Ben Brosnan and full-forward Ciaran Lyng to move 1-14 to 1-7 clear.
Having kicked 12 wides beforehand, the visitors started to really find their range when it was too late, as points from Karol Slattery and Niall McNamee (2) backed up Lyons's 66th minute goal, but Jason Ryan's side managed to not let themselves get caught at the finish.
