New format for championships

February 12, 2010
Clubs have overwhelmingly voted in favour of a motion to change the format of the Wexford senior hurling and football championships this year.

A meeting of the county board was held in Enniscorthy earlier this week and it was agreed that a new format would be put in place straight away.

The new format will see steps taken to reduce the number of teams from 16 to 12 over the course of the next three years. This will be achieved by having the two losing semi finalists of the relegation play offs relegated, while the two winners will play off and the loser will also be relegated. The intermediate champions are to go up meaning there will be two teams less next year.
