Shelmalier Club notes

June 29, 2009
The annual tidying up of our club grounds and clubhouse will take place from 10am to 1pm this Sat 4th July, with tea and sandwiches served in the complex afterwards. We are asking all club members, supporters and parents to give us a helping hand. So gather your paint brush, shovel, sprayer, strimmer etc and make your way over to Hollymount this Saturday. Shelmaliers had the first prize in the June Model County Draw; Eamonn Murphy C/o Fr. Murphy's was the lucky winner of a car or 15,000. Other winners were Sports Savers Voucher 200 Liam O'Connor, Screen, 200 Hugh Murphy Kilcorral, Castlebridge, 200 Mary Kelly Ballycrane, Castlebridge 200 Sharon Doyle Johnstown, Castlebridge, 100 Sean Kelly Ballyruane, Screen Thanks to all who supported our draw in any way. Well done to Conor Byrne, Screen, who attained 4th place in the Leinster Poc Fada competition recently. Up against the cream of each of the Leinster counties, Conor and his trusty caddy Brian 'Turf' Murphy did the club and county proud, in their first ever event, just one poc behind the eventual winner. Conor would like to thank the club and hurley maker Albert Randall who provided him with a hurl crafted from Irish ash specially for the competition. Three shels men were on the victorious Wexford minor hurling team that beat Laois this week. Benny Barron, Screen (Captain), James Gordon, Curracloe and Brian Doyle, Screen. All three men gave stalwart performances and did us proud. Wexford will now meet Kilkenny in Leinster final which will be played in Croke Park in early July. Our under 12 Footballers played Craanford last Tuesday night. Craanford made a bright start to the game but a goal from Dylan Potter just before half time left the half time score at Craanford 2-06 Shels 1-03. The second half began with our lads really turning on the style with a succession of points from Jody Donohoe, Conor Hearne (2), Dylan Potter (2) and Shane Neville to make the scores level. The teams shared the next four points before a point from Cian Manley left the Shels a point up with two minutes to go. Craanford went on the attack and with almost the last kick of the game the ball ended up in the back of the net to leave Craanford winners on a scoreline of 3-08 to 1- 12. Best were Nick Whelan, Dan Campbell, Nathan Murphy and Conor Hearne with Subs Bill Quaid and Gareth Jones also making a big impact. Well done to Sean Byrne, Screen and Neil Rossiter Castlebridge who were recently selected for county duty on the Wexford U15 hurling and football teams respectively. Our Juvenile hurling team lost to Faythe Harriers this week Our Junior B footballers lost to Bannow/Ballymitty 0-13 to 1-1 in Rathangan on Sunday eve whilst our Junior A footballers recorded a solid win over Glynn Barntown 2-12 to 1-6 at the same venue.
