Shelmalier Club notes

June 23, 2009
Congratulations to Conor Byrne, Screen, from the Shelmaliers club who will represent Wexford in the Leinster Final of the Poc Fada on Thursday night next, 25th June in The Curragh. Conor, a 19 year student in UCD, competed in Co. Final last night and is looking forward to the competition. Best of luck Conor from everyone in the club. Shels under 10 boys were in action in the first round of the Over the Water league against Buffers Alley recently. The Shels side showed some lovely skills and amongst those to shine on the night were Cathal Hillis, Ross Banville, Niall Hearne & Jamie Furlong. Our senior hurlers, missing several regulars drew with Rathnure Wednesday evening in Rathnure on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-11. Shels playing with the wind in the first half went into the break a point up. They stepped up a gear in the second half and Rathnure had to dig deep to force the draw. On the night, when the entire team played well, Seamie Harding, Ibar (Hurler) Murphy, Aidan Murphy, Brian Malone and Andre O'Brien were to the fore. Our junior A hurlers had a draw with Rathnure in Hollymount on Saturday evening last. Final score 2-10 to 1-13. Best on the night were Fergie & Vinnie Parker, Conor Walsh and Willie O'Shaughnessy. Our junior B hurlers had am emphatic victory over the Volunteers in Parc Charmann last Saturday evening. Among those to shine were Niall Cullen, Cathal O'Shaughnessy, Shane Griffith, Kevin O' Leary, Aidan Cash & Darren Shiggins Senior Footballers went down to Adamstown 2-9 to 0-7 recently in Adamstown. Two loose goals were the culprit as up until then it was a close contest. Best on the night were senior debut player Aidan Cash & Andre O'Brien. Our second team had a good win over Shamrocks in Hollymount last Sat. Final score 4-9 to 1-8. Best on the night were James Murphy and Mark Tobin Our third team had a well earned win over St. Joseph's second team in Hollymount recently. Ciaran Walsh put them 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after 12 minutes. Shels were playing the better football with Shane Griffith very strong at wing back and Graham Lawler, Jamie Horan, John Nolan and Darren Shiggins controlling the central positions. Shels finished the half strongly with points from Graham Lawler, Cathal O'Shaughnessy & Ciaran Walsh to leave the half time score at 0-6 to 0-1.The Josephs came back strong in the second half but with points from Cathal O'Shaughnessy & Paddy Kelly before, a great cross by substitute Damien Breen set up John Hearne who did a lot of 'basket-ball' style work before finishing with a good goal. Paraic Scully added a point and the Shels looked home and dry. However, St. Josephs never gave up and a point followed by a very good goal from a close in free by 'Fitzy' put a close finish to a very entertaining and tough-fought contest. Final score 1-9 to 1-6.
