Volunteers Club Notes
December 01, 2008
The footballers captured the club's first Junior championship since 1937,
when they narrowly overcame a gallant Shelmaliers team, 1-04 to 0-04 in
Blackwater last Saturday. The Vols reached half-time leading 1-02 to 0-1,
thanks to a Richie Kehoe goal. Both sides were guilty of missing scoreable
frees, and when the shels drew to within a goal with minutes remaining, a
nervy ending was assured. However, the Vols managed to preserve a clean
sheet and captain Paul Cullen gratefully accepted the Fergie Duff cup. The
team then went back to the Riverside Hotel for a meal before moving onto
Gaynors for subsequent celebrations. Supporter and players alike were then
treated to a night of fun and celebration, while some of the players proved
themselves capable on the field of the play, their singing definitely lacked
the X factor.
The previous night, the 1983 Intermediate championship winning side were
reunited to celebrate their great achievement. A great night was had by all.
Attention now turns to the Junior D Hurling final, where we face Enniscorthy
side Shamrocks. All support will be greatly appreciated as the club attempts
to secure a remarkable double.
The U-8 footballers train every Friday night at St. Peters and from 6 to 7
and all are welcome.
