Bonnar looking forward to new challenge

November 13, 2008
New Wexford hurling boss Colm Bonnar insists he is unfazed by the controversy which surrounded the departure of his predecessor John Meyler, and is looking forward to taking charge of a county team for the first time. Meyler was sacked last month after a four-player delegation met with Wexford chairman Ger Doyle to seek a change in management, but Bonnar has declared that will not be an issue for him. He said: "I haven't really thought anything on that issue. Really, I've just been elected since Tuesday. The Wexford county board had a process in place. They had 12 people that they were going through. They interviewed them all first and then there was another interview. I just took it from there. "I gave them my ideas and plans. It ended up then with them asking me would I take over. My only plans at the moment are to look for my backroom team selection. I'll work from there. I'll meet the players to see what their goals and ambitions are." The former Tipperary star added: "I've been involved in inter-county (coaching and training) for a while, but it's great to get a chance to manage a team like Wexford. Wexford are one of the traditional hurling counties and I'm certainly looking forward to it."
