WEXFORD CREAMERY RACKARD LEAGUE ROINN B BOYS FOOTBALL FINAL
Fethard 2-11
Glynn 2-5
A powerful first half performance laid the foundation for this impressive victory for Fethard in the last of the Wexford Creamery Rackard League Football finals played in Wexford Park on Saturday last. While the weather held up for the first two finals unfortunately much of this game had to be played in stormy conditions but it is to both teams credit that they made light of the conditions to produce a game full of intensity and skill.
Fethard played with the wind in the first half and opened the scoring with a pointed free from Richard Waters. However they were rocked on four minutes when Luke Barnes broke through their defence and shot at goal only for it to deflect off full forward Sean Whelan and sail past the wrong footed Niall Roche. Fethard responded brilliantly and reeled off a series of points playing intelligent skilful football. Midfielder Evan Rowe was on the mark with a long range point and this was followed by a left footed minor from the dynamic Mikey Dwyer after good work from Patrick Traynor. The mounting Fethard pressure finally told when the hard working Evan Rowe gathered the ball on end line and forced his way to the edge of the square and finished from a tight angle to make it 1-3 to 1-0. The Fethard pressure continued with a long range effort from the open stand side from Richard Waters followed by a brace from Mikey Dwyer. Glynn were showing admirable courage in defence and limited Fethard's goal scoring opportunities through excellent work from Matthew Joyce and impressive goalkeeper Luke Rafter. Indeed Glynn were unlucky not to snatch a breakaway goal but Niall Roche did well to stop and clear Sean Maher's effort with thirteen minutes gone. A string of fine points from Waters, Dwyer and Brian Power was fair reward for the excellent team work of this Fethard outfit and they reached half time leading 1-9 to 1-0.
In fairness to Glynn they settled to their task straight from the off in the second half with wing back Ben O'Shea first timing the breaking ball over the bar. Richard Waters and Shane Wilde traded frees before Luke Rafter produced a magical full length save to deny the wizardry of Mikey Dwyer. Again Waters and Aaron Kehoe swapped pointed frees as the rain lashed down. Shane Wilde had another pointed free with seven minutes remaining to make it 1-11 to 1-4. Fethard had loaded their defence in the second period and Glynn found it increasingly difficult to make headway against this packed defence ably marshalled by Ricky Rowe and Daire Barden. However this game was not going to fizzle out instead there was a riot of scores in the final minutes. Fethard broke up field with Evan Rowe getting on the end of fine move and his shot dipped under the crossbar to make it 2-11 to 1-4.
However Glynn showed tremendous character in their fightback .Shane Wilde, who impressed throughout, fired home a twenty metre free with two minutes remaining. Glynn pushed forward and were awarded another twenty metre free but this time Wilde's effort was cleared off the line to Ben O'Shea and his shot fizzed over the bar with the last kick of the game. Glynn had excellent performers in Luke Rafter, Matthew Joyce, David Clarke,Matt Doyle, Shane Wilde and San Maher while Fethard had match winners in Ricky and Evan Rowe, Daire Barden, Adam Swan, Brian Power, Mikey Dwyer and Richard Waters.
