Gorey CBS retain Roinn A football title
November 10, 2008
Gorey CBS 5 - 5
Piercestown 2 - 8
Gorey CBS retained their Wexford Creamery Roinn A football title with a classy display that proved too much for a determined Piercestown outfit in the first of the Rackard League finals played in Wexford Park on Saturday last. In a fantastic game of football both teams played intelligent skilful football but CBS were outstanding in front of goal with their inside forwards taking their opportunities with deadly efficiency .
The game started at a furious pace and Piercestown's Aaron Maddock had to be alert to clear Kevin Harrington's goalbound effort off the line with three minutes gone. It was Piercestown who opened the scoring with a fine point from Joe Coleman on the run on six minutes. However Gorey responded immediately when Paul Murphy was first to react to Alex Maher's save and he crashed the ball to the net from the edge of the square. Piercestown pegged back another minor through Darren Codd but they were rocked by a brilliant Gorey goal on nine minutes. Kevin Harrington slipped a pass to captain Mark Kinsella on the burst and as he drew the defence he timed his pass to Aodhan Doyle to perfection who finished superbly. Kinsella and Codd traded points before Jake Firman fired over with his left to make it 2-1 to 0-4 with thirteen minutes gone. Gorey struck for another major when Eoin McGuickian's long range effort dipped under the crossbar to extend their lead. Paddy Whelan landed a fine point for Piercestown to make it 3-1 to 0-5 with twenty three minutes gone but again the predatory nature of the Gorey forwards was evident when Conor Levingstone latched onto Alex Maher's fine save from a Kevin Harrington piledriver to poach another goal. There was just time for Nicky Greene to raise a white flag for the Murrintown boys leaving it 4-1 to 0-6 at half time.
With the wind at their backs it looked like Gorey could cut loose in the early stages of the second half. Alex Maher pulled off a super double save inside the opening minute but target man Kevin Harrington was on hand to split the posts. This was quickly followed by another sublime move by Gorey with captain Kinsella and Levingstone at the heart of it. In a rerun of the first half goal this time Kinsella found Levingstone in space inside the Piercestown defence and he calmly slotted the ball under the advancing Maher to make it 5-1 to 0-6. Full credit to Piercestown they responded immediately when Jake Firman's twenty metre free found it's way to the back of the net through a crowded goalmouth. Firman added another pointed free before Joe Coleman blasted the ball to the top corner from twenty metres to throw the game wide open again, 5-2 to 2-6. It was now a time for cool Gorey heads and Ben Egan and Conor Gibson got to grips with the Piercestown attack and delivered an excellent supply of ball to the inside forwards. Mark Kinsella pointed two frees with five minutes left to steady the Gorey nerves. Eoin McGuckian and Joe Coleman traded late points as Gorey deservedly held on to reclaim the Rackard Roinn A title.
Best for Piercestown were Alex Maher, Harry O'Connor, Aaron Maddock, Jake Firman and Joe Coleman while Gorey had match winners in Ben Egan, Paul Murphy, James Teal, Mark Kinsella and the superb full forward line of Conor Levingstone,Kevin Harrington and Aodhan Doyle.
