Travers unhappy with players' portrayal
November 06, 2008
Wexford hurler Malachy Travers has revealed his discontent with the way in which he and his team-mates have been portrayed in the media over the sacking of their former manager John Meyler.
The Model defender has admitted that some of the players within the squad felt the need for change, but pointed out that it was the Wexford County Board's ultimate decision to remove the St Finbarr's clubman for his position as manager.
"Quite clearly we were portrayed in the wrong way with the whole thing. John definitely didn't deserve the treatment he got. The players had their views and they'd stand beside them. But it is the fact that we were portrayed as if we had acted in some kind of underhand way.
"There were rumours that the players wanted to remain anonymous. We were very clear about our feelings and how we felt about John. We felt that we needed a change.
"It was portrayed to the media as if it were a player power issue and about players' unrest. The players don't hire and fire managers and that was never really stated by the County Board and it was a bad way for things to end for John.
"Secondly, it was a sad reflection on the players who give good service to the county to be portrayed that way by the County Board," he added.
As for the appointment of Meyler's successor, Travers believes that the position is a real chance for any new manager looking to prove himself.
"The only person who has openly stated their interest in the job is Kevin Ryan," said Travers.
"There is a lack of expectation there from everybody about how Wexford will perform in 2009. It is a great job for someone to start out in.
"It would be a great job for an up-and-coming manager, someone in the mould of Jason Ryan. I don't know if there is any need to go for a big name. We just need to get a good structure for the team.
"It has been Kilkenny that have been giving us problems over the last couple of years. We have been able to tussle with any other team."
