Shelmalier Club notes

October 01, 2008
Senior Football The seniors had a great victory over Duffry Rovers in Bellefield on Sunday afternoon on a scoreline 0-18 to 0-7. Colin Redmond was on fire all day and contributed 10 points in total, 7 from free's. Others to score were Derek Walsh 0-3, Aidan Murphy 0-2, Stephen Banville 0-2, and Gareth Dunne 0-1. Goal keeper, Paudie McMahon made a fantastic save in the 14th minute when Duffry were only 2 points behind and his skills were called on again 5 minutes later where he denied the Duffry yet again. Over all it was a self assured performance from the over the water men as they made it three wins from three matches in their first year in the senior ranks, therefore going through to the quarter finals with ease. U10 The Over the Water under 10 hurling Finals take place this Saturday 4th October, in Hollymount, starting at 10.00 am. Ten teams from the district are taking part and a great days hurling is planned. All welcome. Hurling league Over 300 young hurlers converged on Hollymount on Sunday last for the finals of the under 12 and under 14, Over the Water hurling league. Six teams competed in each competition following a league stage which ran over the last eight weeks. The local Shelmalier teams gave a good display of themselves, unluckily missing out on league success. Presenting the prizes league secretary Seamus O Leary stressed that the aim of the league was to promote hurling among young people in the area and looking at the displays on Sunday it certainly achieved its stated aims, with outstanding displays from all teams. Buffers Alley won the under 14 title and with Crossabeg/Ballymurn winning the under 12 league title. A sincere thanks to all the people who helped in any way on Sunday last, but especially to the ladies committee on the magnificent spread which was laid on for competing teams and their supporters. Junior Football The Junior Footballers had a convincing win over Clonard in Piercestown on Saturday last. Final score 3-13 to 0-3. We now progress to the quarter finals but just failed to top the group as Blackwater edged us out on score difference. Best on the day were Adrian & John Veale, Vinny Parker, Niall Kelly, Andre O'Brien and Joe Kelly.
