All-Stars mean nothing to Meyler

October 01, 2008
Wexford manager John Meyler doesn't attach much importance to the All-Star awards, insisting that he is only concerned with trying to improve his team and make them into All-Ireland contenders. Eyebrows were raised last week when the beaten Leinster finalists failed to receive a single All-Star nomination, but Meyler wasn't making an issue over the snub. "I don't have much interest in All-Star nominations as I don't have much time for individual awards," he said. "It's a subjective opinion. A lot of those reporters on the selection panel don't even go to hurling matches. I won't worry about it until we win the All-Ireland. "If we win the All-Ireland, the All-Stars will look after themselves, for the majority of players are chosen on just a single game." The Our Lady's Island man added: "I'm only interested in trying to bring Wexford hurling to another level, build on the Waterford game (All-Ireland quarter-final), not let it bypass us, so we can compete with Kilkenny. "Any player would prefer a provincial or All-Ireland medal to an All-Star. That's what he will be remembered by." Meyler is committed to leading the Slaneysiders for a third year, although his reappointment has yet to be rubberstamped by the county board.
