Great Gael Seanie Murphy will be missed by all ages in Ferns
September 26, 2008
Seanie 'Clicker' Murphy died recently aged 74 after a short illness having given a lifetime of service to the GAA both as a footballer and hurler and in pioneering under-age coaching in the local St. Aidan's club.
Seamus contested two county senior football finals, winning an Intermediate hurling medal in 1958 and as captain junior football honours three years previously. At 25 or 26 years of age he emigrated to the United States where his brother Tomas and Fr Harold already resided and for over twenty years he was bus driver in New York city. He returned to Ferns in the early 1980's.
He had a major role to play in under-age coaching and placed great emphais on perfecting skills and on his charges enjoying their participation in the games. Under his tutelage the club produced many notable successes at under-age level on the county scene, including a Rackard League victory and also a brace of under-21 titles.
His wife Kathleen, sons Michael and James, and daughters Helen Tonks and Margaret Vickers and his extended family survive him.
