Colfer not found wanting in great game

September 12, 2008
In one of the best championship matches for many years, county champions Clongeen displayed plenty of passion and determination in grasping victory from the hands of defeat when overcoming Horeswood by just one point in last Saturday evening's Wexford Senior Football Championship tie at O'Kennedy Park, New Ross. A last minute point from Emmet Kent secured the win, with the county champions having to turn a four-point deficit into this victory. There were some tremendous displays form players on both sides with P J Banville and Thomas Howlin impressing early on for Horeswood with a number of fine scores. Much of Clongeen's good work was done in the third quarter and they enjoyed a four-point lead at the break (1-6 to 0-5) The quality of this game can be seen from the sequence of events early in the second-half by the response to Clongeen's second goal shortly after the resumption when after P J Banville was fouled, David Shannon converted the penalty. Banville then got a goal himself and it looked as if his side was destined for victory. It was perhaps the influence of Paddy Colfer in the closing quarter that proved the difference with his goal and a good point and his influence and involvement in the final score of the game.
