Tucker's passing mourned

September 12, 2008
Enniscorthy lost a much-admired sportsman with the death unexpectedly on Tuesday of last week of Tommy Foley of Pearse Road. Tommy was only 64 years of age and was a man who excelled in many sports fields including hurling, football, boxing and pitch and putt. Tucker's talent first began to emerge over 50 years ago in the old St Patrick's Boy's Club, a most important outlet in the town at that time run by the likes of Fr Tony Scallan. He was a star hurler with CBS teams and he won a Special Junior medal and later a senior hurling championship title with Shamrocks in 1964. He was regarded as a sturdy wing or corner back possessing a steely determination irrespective of what opponent he was up against. When he moved through work to County Tipperary in the late 1960's he joined Thurles Sarsfields' and one of his club mates there, the legendary Jimmy Doyle attended the funeral. Tommy was also a talented footballer, playing for many years with Starlights. His wife Anne, sons Tommy, Bobby and Jim, daughter Anne, brothers John, Joe and Tony and sister Therese (Tighe) survive him as well as daughters-in-law, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
