Westmeath GAA Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O. WONDERFUL WEEKEND FOR WESTMEATH GAA: NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE DIV 2 FINAL: Westmeath senior hurlers claimed top honours in this year's Allianz National League when they overcame Carlow in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick last Sunday. Westmeath started the game at a very fast pace and were three points up after six minutes before Carlow registered their first score. This spell set the tone of the match and although Westmeath seem to fall asleep for a period during this half and Carlow did draw level at six points each one always felt that we would come out on top, thanks to some fine shooting by Brendan Murtagh. Westmeath scored their first goal in the thirtieth minute when John Shaw broke through and stroked the ball to the back of the Carlow net, by half time five of the six forwards had all scored. Westmeath led at the break by 1-08 to 0-06. Westmeath got a dream start to the second half when in the first minute a ball came back off the Carlow crossbar and Derek Mc Niochlas was there to tap home the second goal of the match. This left Carlow with a hugh task and even though they tried hard they just could not close the gap. The Westmeath defences played extremely well in the second half under constant pressure, and were ably led by both Paul Greville and Darren Mc Cormack. The forwards all played well throughout and man of the match Brendan Murtagh (Centre forward) finished the game with a tally of seven points. Westmeath won on a final score of 2-12 to 0-11. this win will do the lads good as they prepare for the first round of the Leinster Championship against Dublin. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Westmeath senior footballers made what could be described as history last weekend when they defeated Monaghan in the final round on the Allianz National league Div 2 and thus secured promotion to Div 1 of the league for next year. The game started at a fast pace with Monaghan registering the first score, but a point from a free from Dessie Dolan and two further points from Fergal Wilson showed that Westmeath wanted to win this tie, and when Denis Glennon got the games only goal in the fourteenth minute things were looking up, however Monaghan took control of the game and Westmeath only managed one more point in the half and went in trailing on a score line of 0-09 to 1-04. Monaghan started the second half brighter and added two further points befor Westmeath had even settled into the game to extend the lead to four points and defeat looked on the cards, but the Westmeath backs playing well and the forwards fighting hard for every ball there was still hope. The introduction of Martin Flanagan into the match was a move which probably swung this game in Westmeath's favour as he won the centre field battle hands down in this half. Two points from Denis Glennon and one each from Ennis and Flanagan meant thatwith thirty two minutes gone the match was level. Westmeath tagged on two further points the last one in the dying minutes of the game from John Smyth (Surprise Sub) who played after coming on was to seal victory and promotion for Westmeath much to the delight of the travelling supporters.
