Westmeath GAA Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O. NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE: Westmeath senior hurlers continued this years Division 2 league campaign with a win over Roscommon in Cusack Park last Saturday. Westmeath fielded a strong side with the Clonkill players back on duty after their All Ireland Success. The first half started at a very lively pace and with seven minutes gone the sides were level at 3pts each. Westmeath took control of the game and after an error in defence by Roscommon Goalkeeper Niall Kilcoyne struck home the first of Westmeath's three goals, from here on the first half belonged to Westmeath. Further points from Brendan Murtagh Brian Connaughton and Brian Smyth stretched the Westmeath score before Adam Price fielded a high ball and turned and scored the first of his two goals. Roscommon replied with two fine points from midfielder Gerry Fallon. On the stroke of half time Niall Kilcoyne broke through the Roscommon defence and gave a great pass to Adam price who duly despatched the ball to the net for his second goal. Westmeath led at half time by 3-11 to 0-06 and in truth the game seemed over as a contest. The second half started brightly with Roscommon scoring two points before Westmeath got on the score board, but they replied with three fine scores from Brendan Murtagh and substitue Paddy Dowdall. On the 17th minute Roscommon corner forward Tomas Seale doubled on a high ball to the back of the Westmeath net. This score gave Roscommon a lift and they added a further three points without reply. Westmeath seemed to sit back on their lead during the second half and gave Roscommon a chance to get back into this game . Points from Niall Kilcoyne and Andrew Mitchell stretched the lead again before Roscommon finished with a flourish of three further points. Final score Westmeath 3-19 to Roscommon 1-13 NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Westmeath footballers continued their National League campaign last Sunday in Cusack Park with a hard fought win over Armagh. In a match which could be described as being sometimes ill tempered, and both sides loosing players before the end, it produced some fine football and looked at different times as if might even end in a draw. The first half started at a fast pace with Westmeath scoring first a point through Fergal Wilson followed on with another from Dessie Dolan, before Armagh scored their first point, with seventeen minutes gone the sides were level at four points each with both side guilty of some missed chances and wayward shooting. Westmeath were then dealt a cruel blow when Dessie Dolan picked up an injury and had to be substituted, Westmeath added on two further points and on the stroke of half time Martin Flanagan knocked home an important goal after a mistake by the Armagh keeper. Westmeath led at by 1-05 to 0-04. The second half started with Armagh scoring first and they attacked every ball as if their life depended on it. Westmeath were trying hard, but were playing a short passing game which at times was getting them in trouble, and some ten minutes had elapsed before they registered their first score. Armagh were applying serious pressure and on sixteen minutes were awarded a penalty which Aidan O' Rourke slotted to the back of the Westmeath net. This changed the look of the game with only three points between the sides and Armagh playing the better football. Westmeath were reduced to fourteen men when Michael Ennis was sent off for a second yellow card, and following the missed free Westmeath scored a fine point at the other end by Tommy Cleary. Armagh were then reduced to fourteen when corner back Enda Mc Nulty was shown a red card for an off the ball incident. Westmeath finished the stronger with fine scores from Fergal Wilson and Martin Flanagan (who gave a man of the match performance on the day). On the stroke of injury time Armagh's Aidan O Rourke was dismissed for a second bookable offence and Martin Flanagan slotted over the resulting free. The final score was 1-11 to 1-06 SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE: If anybody is interested in entering a team in the National Seactain Na Gaeilge Table quiz next week please contact Irish Language Officer Aidan Davitt on 087 8235945.
