Lagan Cement Senior Football Championship The penultimate round of matches in the Lagan Cement Senior Football championship was played on Sunday last and a very exciting final round is now guaranteed. Mullingar Shamrocks had a five point win over a battling St. Malachy's, while The Downs enjoyed a two point win over St. Loman's, Mullingar. In the third match of the round Killucan had a deserved five point win over county champions, Tyrrellspass, which gives them a wonderful chance of reaching the quarter final. Bunbrosna Cassidy's Hotel Intermediate Hurling Championship In the Cassidy's Hotel Intermediate Hurling Championship, played on Tuesday last Southern Gaels, Delvin and Castlepollard had wins over Clonkill, Cullion and Turin respectively. With two rounds to play, Castlepollard are through to the semi final with every other side still in contention for the remaining three slots. Southern Gaels All-Ireland Under 16 "B" Hurling Championship On Saturday, August 25th, the All-Ireland Under 16 B Hurling championship takes place, in a blitz format, in Westmeath. Three venues are to be used: In Robinstown, Carlow, Kildare, Down and Roscommon will play, The teams in action in Kinnegad are Laois, Wicklow, Armagh and Kerry while The Downs is the venue for Westmeath, Meath, Derry and Mayo. Preliminary round matches take place at 11 a.m., 12 noon and 1 p.m. After lunch the semi finals will be played at the three venues, with the A final scheduled for Cusack Park at 5.45 p.m., following the 3rd/4th place play-off at 4.45 p.m. The B final will be played in The Downs and the C Final in Kinnegad, both at 4.30 p.m. A wonderful day's hurling is guaranteed with an excellent final in prospect in Cusack Park. Westmeath G.A.A. Club Development Lotto Congratulations to Michael Johnston, c/o Athlone Extrusions (Seller: M. McCormack (Maryland), who won the jackpot in the Westmeath G.A.A. Club Development Lotto on August 7th. The jackpot in the draw of 14th August is €1,500. Club Players Some of the suggestions by Padraig Duffy, Player Welfare Manager for the improvement of the club player's lot: 1. Completion of subsidiary inter county competitions (e.g O'Byrne Cup -F, Walsh Cup - H) be completed in January (F) and January/February (H). 2. National Leagues to be completed without semi finals/finals. 3. National League County panel to be 24. 4. "Two strikes and out" in Inter County Hurling and Football championships. 5. Consider bringing the All-Ireland hurling final to the last or second last Sunday of August, Football to first or second Sunday of September. 6. Agreement of Competition Structures on a long term basis. 7. Players be made available to clubs for one night per week, with exceptions prior to league and Championship Inter County matches. 8. Period of time that players are available to counties prior to be matches be legislated as All-Ireland Final, maximum 20 days, Other Senior championships, maximum 13 days, national League, maximum 6 days, All-Ireland Minor and Under 21 finals, maximum 7 days. 9. No Inter County training weeks/weekends allowed after 31 March, except in the 13 days prior to a championship match or 20 days prior to an All-Ireland final. 10. No Inter County Challenge games to be permitted on Saturdays or Sundays after 31 March. 11. No adult club games should be postponed for the involvement of a county Minor team, except the All-Ireland Minor final. 12. Elimination of replays in the Provincial championships. 13. Abolish Junior and Intermediate Inter county competitions. 14. Legislate for extra time in all Provincial and All-Ireland club championships. 15. County club leagues not be used to determine championship status. 16. Provincial councils organise a senior inter-club provincial league. 17. Increased commitment to floodlighting and all-weather pitches. The above are proposals which will be considered by Central Council in the not-too-distant future.
