Allianz National Football League
On Saturday evening 12th march, the Westmeath footballers made the trip to the capital to Parnell Park to take on Dublin in the fourth round of the National Football League Division 1A.
After a very competitive match, Westmeath were unlucky to come out the wrong side of a 0-11 to 0-9 scoreline. Scores were particularly hard to come by in the first half and after about twenty minutes Westmeath led by 0-2 to 0-1. In the run-up to half-time Dublin took command and by the break had moved three points clear, 0-6 to 0-3.
Dublin continued in the ascendancy on the re-start and moved five points clear before the Westmeath revival commenced. Westmeath took complete control of the match and with about five minutes to go actually moved 0-9 to 0-8 ahead. A very unfortunate injury to Alan Mangan seemed to break the Westmeath impetus and in the remaining minutes Dublin tagged on three points and finished up winning by 0-11 to 0-9.
The Westmeath players and management will be very disappointed not to have taken at least one point from the match and now it's on to Tralee on Saturday evening next and a clash with the All-Ireland champions, Kerry. Obviously this will be a very difficult assignment but one that the Westmeath side will relish in the knowledge that if they show the same commitment as they have done of late then they can certainly test Kerry.
Following last weekend's matches the following is the table:
P W D L Diff Pts
Tyrone 4 4 0 0 19 8
Mayo 4 3 0 1 5 6
Kerry 4 2 0 2 -1 4
Dublin 4 2 0 2 -3 4
Cork 4 1 1 2 2 3
Westmeath 4 1 1 2 -4 3
Offaly 4 1 0 3 -10 2
Donegal 4 1 0 3 -6 2
Allianz National Hurling League
Westmeath travelled to Roscommon on Sunday last and came away with a good eight points win in Division 2A of the National Hurling League.
At the half-time whistle Westmeath led by 0-7 to 0-4 with defences on both sides pretty much on top.
In the second half, buoyed by a Killian Cosgrove goal, Westmeath took control and in the end were comfortable 1-15 to 0-10 winners.
The next outing for the hurlers is on Sunday next when they take on Derry in a home match. This will be the final round of the initial stage of the league for Westmeath and a win would see them progress to the top section of the second phase.
The Division 2A table currently looks like this:
P W D L Diff Pts
Offaly 3 3 0 0 33 6
Westmeath 3 2 0 1 11 4
Derry 2 1 0 1 -9 2
Roscommon 2 0 0 2 -12 0
Kildare 2 0 0 2 -23 0
Leinster Under 21 Football Championship
Westmeath play Longford in the quarter final of the Leinster Under 21 football championship in Cusack Park on St. Patrick's Day.
In the first round Westmeath travelled to Wexford and had a good win while Longford received a bye to this stage. Westmeath will need to improve to overcome the challenge of our neighbours but all involved that there is room for improvement and with a little bit of luck then Westmeath can qualify for the Leinster semi-final.
