Southern Gaels Hurling notes

February 27, 2017

All County Hurling League Division 3

St. Bridget's 0-10   Southern Gaels  0-5

This League fixture was played last Sunday in a continuous downpour and credit to both sides for finishing the game. At one stage in the first half the referee halted the proceedings for five minutes due to a hail shower. The pitch while heavy due to the rain held up well despite the rain.

All things considered it was an entertaining match with little to separate the sides. St. Bridget's had wind and rain advantage in the opening half and made the best of it with four points from play and four from Dermot Faulkener from placed balls. Gaels showed some excellent from but were unable to capitalise on a number of chances created. Tony O'Keeffe did raise two white flags to keep his side in the game.

Gaels began the second half brightly with points from O'Keeffe and Sean Kilgarriff but again failed to make the best of their pressure and possession.  The home side did get forward on a few occasions but found Kieran Duncan at his best in defense and Breen Elliott made three telling saves in the Gaels goals. In the closing quarter Bridget's pointed two frees while Gaels responded with a similar score from O'Keeffe.

Southern Gaels were also well served by Killian Coyle, Ian Power, on his debut, Jonathan Keogh and Ronan Farrell.
