Westmeath manager Michael Ryan knows that his side will have to play better than ever if they are to have any chance of causing a surprise against Galway.

The sides meet in the Leinster SHC at Cusack Park on Sunday week and Galway go into the match as overwhelming favourites to advance to the semi-final.

The Lake County have impressed in the round robin series with wins over Offaly, Kerry and Carlow to come through unbeaten.

However, Ryan admitted to the Westmeath Independent that they still have plenty to work on before they face the Tribesmen.

"We will go away now and prepare well for two weeks. Hopefully we will perform better on the day," stated Ryan.

He added: "Everybody is fighting for their places. There is no name on any jersey in Westmeath. You have to fight for your place and that is reflected in the way the team performed."
