Westmeath manager Tom Cribbin admits that he can't explain his side's comprehensive defeat to Clare last weekend.

The Banner inflicted an eleven-point defeat on the Midlanders at Cusack Park, Ennis last Sunday, leaving Westmeath still seeking their first win of the campaign and in real relegation danger.

Cribbin admitted to the Westmeath Examiner that he had been impressed by his charge's performance against Tipperary the week before, but stressed that the display against Clare left him baffled.

"I just don't know," was Cribbin's reply to what happened in the match. "Liam Kearns came to me after the game last week and said 'how did we get out of here with a point?' He said the intensity and pace of that game was way beyond what they had played this year.

"I just don't know and I can't explain our performance. We were in great form and everyone was in great fettle. We were the complete opposite last week. I just don't know.

"I'd love to have an answer because I know the lads want an answer. They're frustrated too and it's not as if they're deliberately doing something wrong. They are working as hard as any other team."
