Under 12, League: Southern Gaels v Castletown Geoghan

It was the return league fixture of Castletown Geoghan this year, in which we narrowly won  away. It was a great summers evening for hurling, but a few were missing due to scouts and holidays etc. CTG travelled in numbers, but we only had 12, but the 12 we had battled till they had nothing in the tank. The standard of hurling was super. Darragh's defensive skills have really improved, ably supported by Evan who attacked every ball as if his life depended on it. Aaron was well composed and tactfully set up many's an attack. Michael went quietly about his business and was tenacious in every tackle. Cian O Suilleabhain played a super game and anyone who got around him had to work hard. Bobby at  midfield was immense; he blocked, hooked, passed and tackled skilfully, but definitely fielded more that he should have been allowed. Paidí was also in superb form and gave it everything, winning more than his fair share. Seán also put in a sterling performance and his striking on the run was vital for setting up our attacks. CTG players were very skilful and played to their motto of "Quick Ball", from which the Gaels will have to learn from. In the forward line, Odhran and Calum were tackling very hard and were both so unlucky not to score, as they deserved it. Oisín covered some ground, and was so willing to chase every ball which show cased the spirit of the team. Cian Geary was also pumped up and got onto the end of some great deliveries to take his scores well. We were a few scores down in the middle of the second half, but the Gaels managed to pull off a fantastic comeback, to level the game with some of the bravest tackling and total commitment. Having levelled the game, the time was up and the Gaels didn't want to let this victory slip and all players demanded extra time be played. They seized this opportunity and led by a goal to 2 points at half time of extra time. However, I think tiredness set in after the early morning training session that day, and they lost their shape, to concede a few goals. However it was the performance that was most important and the parents supporting on the line were well impressed. Players on the night were: Aaron Lynch, Cian O'Suilleabhain (0-1), Calum McKnight, Evan Farrell, Darragh Elliott, Odhran Dolan, Oisin O Flaherty, Paidí O Leochain (1-0), Bobby Nugent (0-1), Cian  Geary (4-3), Michael Dolan, Sean Murphy.

Under 10 Southern Gaels v St Brigids

On a lovely Summers evening, allot of parents make the trek to Rochfortbridge for the Westmeath League match. We were entertained with an exciting game, essentially made possible by Johnny Martin, Dano McMonagle and Luke Whelan, who turned their jerseys inside out and played a stint each with the opposition, allowing all our players more competitive match time. Cormac Bradley was first off the mark with a well taken brace of goals. Gearoid McCarthy who's striking has wonderfully improved, blasted a super goal, followed by Luke Whelan striking well to rack up a tally of 1-1. In the backline, Cillian Geary was minding the nets well and takin great puck outs. Jack Mulvihill and Oisín Flynn worked wonderfully together to stop most balls coming through, with Oisín breaking forward to take a well-earned goal. Luke O'Connell played really well bursting out well and striking left and right up the field. Luke Farrell was as ever lively in the forward and always looked dangerous and finished with a fine goal. Leon Macken and Sean Cosgrove were tenacious in their tackling upsetting the opposition play. Johnny Martin and Dano McMonagle both played extremely well and passed very well, with Dano scoring 2 points and Johnny taking one. Shane Wheatley moved well from defence into attack to take the last goal of the game. Southern Gaels ran out victors, played very well as a team, worked hard for each other and are all improving with every game.

Players for the night were: Luke O'Connell, Oisín Flynn, Gearóid McCarthy, Dano McMonagle, Luke Whelan, Johnny Martin, Jack Mulvihill, Cormac Bradley, Luke Farrell, Cillian Geary, Leon Macken, Seán Cosgrove, Shane Wheatley.

Southern Gaels 3-12   Cullion  3-9

Southern Gaels enjoyed a hard won victory over Cullion in a recent championship match in Moate. Played in very unfavourable conditions with heavy showers of rain throughout both sides served up a thrilling contest.
There were five gaols in the first half with Gaels netting the first through Ronan Farrell after five minutes. Gaels added some excellent points and a second goal through M.J. Kelly by the end of the first quarter. However, Cullion stuck to their task and recovered well with Damien Golden showing great leadership. Five points, four from play kept them in touch and though M.J. Kelly netted his second for the Athlone side Cullion manager two goals in the five minutes before half time to leave Gaels just a point to the good at the break. The second half was equally as exciting though with less scores. Gaels hit over eight points and were in the lead throughout. Cullion never gave up and a goal with ten minutes remaining had Gaels on edge until the final whistle. Best on the day were M.J. Kelly, Kieran Duncan, Louis Page and the ever reliable Patrick Flynn who was outstanding at centre-field.
