Kieran Martin hailed Westmeath's self-belief after their sensational comeback victory over Meath.

The inspirational Maryland man scored 2-3, including two late fisted points to nudge his side in front, as the Lake County finally slayed the Royal dragon in championship football.

"We knew coming in it was going to be tough. We didn't expect to be down that much at half-time," he told RTE.

"We came just to be in the game. Look, we knew we had it in us. We worked hard for the last seven months. It's just an unbelievable feeling.

"There is a huge rivalry between us. To get our first ever win in championship (against Meath), and to do it that way, is even better."

Asked why Westmeath were so sluggish in the first half, Martin replied: "I think a lot of it was nerves. We had a lot of people that never played here before. But we still knew at half-time that we weren't out of it.

"We knew if we got the first few scores that we'd be straight back into ti and we built on it from there."
