Westmeath SFC: Loman's dethroned by neighbours

October 12, 2014

Mullingar Shamrock's Ciaran Curley

St. Loman's reign as Flanagan Cup holders is over after town rivals Mullingar Shamrocks came from behind to win their SFC semi-final replay at Cusack Park on a 1-10 to 1-9 scoreline.

It was a sweet victory for Bernard Flynn's charges who had suffered a heavy defeat to their neighbours in the group stages before earning a surprise draw a fortnight ago. This time it was a case of third time lucky as the Springfield outfit set up what will be a fourth Westmeath SFC final meeting since 2010 with Garrycastle on October 26.

Three points from John Heslin and another from Shane Dempsey had Loman's 0-4 to 0-2 ahead before a Ciaran Curley goal approaching half-time gave Shamrocks a slender 1-3 to 0-5 interval lead.

The champions looked to have turned it around when Kelvin Reilly's 33rd minute goal, coupled with points from Paul Sharry and Heslin, put them 1-7 to 1-4 in front. But just as they had done in the drawn game, Shamrocks fought back to level with scores from Darragh Daly and Lorcan Smyth before edging it.
