A mass brawl involving players, mentors and spectators marred the end of tonight's Westmeath SFC quarter-final between Mullingar Shamrocks and Tyrrellspass at Cusack Park.
The trouble was sparked after Tyrrellspass were awarded a highly contentious free in the third minute of injury-time which county star Ger Egan slotted over to earn Tom Coffey's men a 0-12 to 1-9 draw. Referee Shane Farrell didn't issue any red cards, but suspensions could yet be imposed by Westmeath CCC ahead of Wednesday night's replay.
In the final minute of normal time, Tyrrellspass forward David Glennon had a strong penalty claim turned down. Ironically, the only goal of the game came from a Lorcan Smyth penalty.
There is a history of bad blood between the clubs with similar unsavoury scenes having taken place at the end of a championship encounter six years ago.
