Westmeath SHC: champions stay unbeaten

August 18, 2014

Castletown Geoghegan celebrate.
Champions Castletown-Geoghegan maintained their 100 per cent record in the Westmeath SHC when they came from behind to defeat Clonkill at Cusack Park last night.

Leinster League winners Clonkill, who were the only team to beat Castletown in last year's championship, looked set for victory when Anthony Price's goal helped them to a 1-11 to 0-7 half-time lead, but the black and ambers drew level with a 59th minute goal from Blaine Lehart before late points from Neal Kirby and Alan Mangan won it for them.

With five wins from win, Pat O'Brien's charges are assured of a semi-final spot with two rounds of the group stages still to play. Raharney come next on eight points after they thrashed Crookedwood by 8-19 to 0-7 on Saturday evening.

Clonkill, St. Oliver Plunkett's and Castlepollard each have six points. Last year's runners-up Plunkett's edged out 'Pollard by 3-5 to 1-8 on Saturday night, with Conor Lynch scoring two of their goals.

Lough Lene Gaels remain in the hunt for a semi-final spot also after beating neighbours Delvin 2-9 to 1-10. With no points on the board, the Valley men and the 'Wood are destined for the relegation playoff.
