Under 14 Girls
Athlone v Mullingar Shamrocks
Athlone U14 Girls continued their winning ways on Tuesday last against Mullingar Shamrocks in Pairc Ciarain with a final score line of Athlone 9-13 Shamrocks 7-7. Shamrocks could only field 12 players so the game started with 12 a side. Athlone dominated from the throw in and scored a goal through Niamh Byrne in the first minute. Niamh followed up with a point from the kick out and Lauryn Mitchell scored another point almost immediately. Two quick goals from Brionna Geoghegan & Niamh Byrne left the scoreline after 5 minutes at 3-2 to 0-0. This trend continued for the rest of the half with Niamh Byrne adding a further 2-5, Brionna a further 1-1 while Chloe Moran scored a point and Kelly Brill a goal. The half time score was Athlone 7-8 Sharmocks 2-0.
Athlone maintained their dominance at the start of the second half and added further scores through Niamh Byrne 0-1, Chloe Moran 0-1, Brionna 1-3 and Niamh McGann 1-0. Athlone management then changed the entire team to give their full panel a run out. The game became disjointed after so many changes and Shamrocks took their opportunity to score a number of late goals and points to reduce the deficit. However the result was never in doubt and the final score was 9-13 to 7-7. Tremendous credit must go to the full panel of 30 players who continue to turn up for training in large numbers and the improvement in the team is remarkable. The next game will be against Garrycastle in a number of weeks time but there will be a large number of challenge games between now and then to give every one a game.
Scorers: Niamh Byrne 4-6, Brionna Geoghegan 3-4, Kelly Brill 1-0, Niamh McGann 1-0, Chloe Moran 0-2, Lauryn Mitchell 0-1.
Athlone Vs Goldsmith Girls (Tubberclair) Thurs 13th June
Athlone U12 Girls took to the pitch for their last encounter of the current Division 2 league, this time facing the stiff opposition of the recently formed Goldsmiths Girls, the Tubberclair ladies U12 team. On a very blustery encounter Captain Katie Larkin was fortunate to win the toss, and opt to play with the wind in the first half. This was to be critical to the outcome, as Athlone's forward line relished the possession the strong wind afforded them, and by half time all the forwards had notched up a score but notably Niamh McGann, Grace Halligan & Ellen O'Connell and they created an unassailable lead with the Goldsmith girls unable to get on the scoreboard.
In the second half and with the wind Goldsmith girls came back into their own, but impressively it was Athlone who opened the second half scoring with by now characteristic surging bursts from midfield by Brionna Geoghegan supported by Amy McBride. While it was the Athlone forwards who dominated in the first half led by Captain Katie Larkin at full forward, it was an heroic performance by the defence that kept the Goldsmith girls from getting back into the game in the second half. Notable performances were given by Victoria Seweryniak, Blessing Imade, Saoirse Hynes and Nicole Murray, but the whole defence worked very well. The lead opened by Athlone in the first half proved a bridge too far for Goldsmith girls, who battled valiantly, and Athlone finished victors on the evening. Well done to all the girls and everyone played an important part in a good win.
