Mullingar Shamrocks Club Notes

SFL Div 1: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-12 v Tang 1-11:
As the score reflects this was a very close encounter in the Senior league Div1. After the recent dry spell the arrival of rain made the underfoot conditions rather difficult for both sides it must be said. We opened brightly and when Lorcan Smyth slotted a penalty on the quarter hour we led by 1-5 to 0-2 . The penalty was awarded, after an excellent 40m run by Daragh Daly, saw him fowled inside the square. We added a further three points before the break but, Tang kicked three frees which nonetheless left us comfortably in front at half time. On the resumption we failed to drive on and playing up the hill struggled to make things happen. Tang's 1-6 in the second half to our 0-4 was an indication of how games can get away from you. The one positive of the second half was the superb free by Ciaran Curley from way out on the left touch line to clinch the points with almost the last kick of the game. We wish Killian Daly a speedy recovery from the injury which he sustained during the opening half. Team: Philip Shaw, Eddie Moore, Kieran Gavin, Aaron Purcell, Aonghus Smyth 0-1, Killian Daly, Paddy Joyce 0-1, Daragh Daly, Denis Corroon 0-1, Dylan McDermott 0-1, Donal O'Donoghue 0-3, John Ganley, Lorcan Smyth 1 -2, Ciaran Curley 0-3, Conor Twomey. Sub: Anthony Clinton, Kalvin Kirwan,
JFC: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-7 v Tang 1-8:
The supporters made the drive out passed Ballymahon for the second time in the week for this round of the Junior Championship. Without ever reaching the levels achieved in our previous outing the side held on for a well deserved win. We were rocked back by an opening penalty, within two minutes by the home side. We began to dominate play and after some early misses James Grogan finished an excellent move to the net which squared matters on ten minutes. Tony Dunne tacked on a fine point on the quarter hour. We should have had a second goal when Sean Maguire hit the butt of the post after a wonderful build up. Continuing to enjoy plentiful possession we added the second goal courtesy of Garry Corroon. Half time came with Shamrocks leading by 2-4 to 1-1. The second half opened with Conor Twomey putting over a free. It was another 20 minutes before we got our next point, a well taken effort by Aonghus Smyth. Tang dominated proceedings in the intervening period and kept us on the defensive. However, our boys never gave up and were bearing down on the Tang goal for a certain score when the referee called time. Team: Ronan Tyrrell, Kalvin Kirwan, Rob Ryan, Stephen Hasset, Effe Siode, David Miller, Davy Coyne, Conor Twomey 0-2, Sean Maguire 0-1, James Grogan, Aonghus Smyth 0 -1, Nathan Smith, Ryan Blundell, Garry Corroon 1- 2, David Noonan, Jordan Warde, Shane Colleary, Tony Dunne 0-1, Niall Kevin.
SFL Div 1: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-16 v Athlone 2-9:
The senior side had their second league outing of the week on Sunday morning. This was a lively contest with plenty of attractive football and some good scores. We opened brightly and led 1-5 to 0-1 after sixteen minutes. Lorcan Smyth was in fine form and notched 1-4 in this period, with Seanie Daly adding the other point. Another two points by John Ganley and Daragh Daly saw us well to the fore. However, a goal from Athlone on twenty minutes gave them renewed confidence and half time arrived with the score 1-9 to 1-4. Anthony Clinton and Lorcan Smyth had the opening scores of the second half. A second goal from the opposition on five minutes set the contest up. The sides exchanged points over the remainder of the hour with Athlone scoring the last three points. Great to see Davy Gavin home from his studies abroad and making a welcome return to the team. Team: Philip Shaw, Eddie Moore, Aaron Purcell, Kalvin Kirwan, Aonghus Smyth, Kieran Gavin 0-1,Paddy Joyce, Daragh Daly, Donal O'Donoghue, John Ganley 0-1, Sean Daly 0-2, Anthony Clinton 0-1, Dylan McDermott, Ciaran Curley 0-3, Lorcan Smyth 1 -6.
U14 Girls: Mullingar Shamrocks v Athlone:
A depleted U14 girls team travelled to Athlone last Tuesday and played a strong Athlone squad and came out second best. The game started as a 12 a side and after 15 minutes we were down 4.05 to no score. Anna Jones arrived with 10 mins to go in first half and helped raise their spirits and get them on the scoreboard, half time score was 7.09 to 2.03 in favour of Athlone. In the second half Mullingar changed their attitude and upped their game, led by captain Louise Gannon, Chloe Flood along with Aideen Glennon (scored 4.02) and Anna Flynn. The girls battled hard but lost out 9.13 to 7.07. A good sporting game Shamrocks girls can be proud of themselves and will get that elusive win shortly this year. Scorers A Glennon 4.02, A Flynn 2.02, A Jones 1.01, M Fagan and P Harte 1pt each.
