Westmeath GAA Notes by Aidan Walsh County PRO

Club Championships Heat up.
On a gloriously hot weekend, the championship action across all three grades of football within the County gave great entertainment with some fabulous action in a number of matches. At Senior level the stand out result of the weekend was St Lomans Mullingar win by ten points over Garrycastle and County Champions Mullingar Shamrocks hard earned win over Maryland. The Downs edged out Athlone by a point while Bunbrosna had two to spare over Castletown Finea/C/W. Castledaly were impressive winners over Killucan and Tyrrellspass were comprehensive winners over a disappointing Coralstown/Kinnegad side. As a consequence of the results at the weekend both Mullingar town teams lead the way in their respective Divisions at this stage with three rounds remaining. At Intermediate level Shandonagh and Caulry lead their respective sections while at Junior level Moate All Whites are unbeaten after four rounds in Section A and St Lomans Mullingar lead the way in Section B.

Coralstown/Kinnegad Official Opening:
The Official opening of new spectator stand and club facilities takes place on Saturday 22nd June. Lots planned for the whole family - BBQ, Children's Play Area/Bouncy Castle, Medal Presentations, Underage and Senior Games, Blessing of the Grounds, Special Guests and lots more. Liam O Neill, Uachtarain CLG will perform the official opening.

County Committee Meeting
Sean Sheridan presided at a meeting of the County Committee on Wednesday 5th June 2013 in Cusack Park, Mullingar. 30 clubs were present on the night with a number of apologies received. At the commencement of the meeting a number of Transfers were agreed with the following players moving clubs;
Adrian Austin - St. Malachys to Loughnavalley, Sean Wesson - Cullion to Fr. Daltons, Jarleth Nohilly - Mullingar Shamrocks to Bunbrosna, Luke Nangle - Ballynacargy to Multyfarnham

A number of correspondence items were dealt with before reports from Bord Peil and Bord Iomana were discussed. Liam Gavin reported from Bord Peil and mentioned the good win over Carlow but mentioned how very disappointed the Senior squad was with their match v Dublin where it was felt that they didn't do themselves justice on the day. Discussion centred around game in Croke Park - with some people expressing the view that games would be better played in smaller/local venues. Seamus Ó Faoláin was very disappointed in particular with the Dublin Supporters on the Hill when Iarmhí were awarded a free & the noise levels from same - he felt some action should be action. The Cathaoirleach expressed the view that all Players like to play in Croke Park urged our Delegates to raise the issue at all levels. In relation to the Race Night - Liam reported on this but was unable to give the final report as a number of Clubs have as yet not returned tickets. The organisers were very disappointed at turn out at Relay - only 2 Intermediate & 1 Junior Clubs turned up - he felt this was not good enough - especially the fact that not 1 Senior Club was present. He asked all Clubs to return tickets - sold or unsold - final report to follow at next meeting.
Matty Conaty reported from Bord Iomand and praised the Under 21 team for their performance v Wexford which restored pride, with our lads very unlucky not to have won. The Cathaoirleach concurred that it was very positive & complimented all Players/ Management & Back Room Team where he felt it was very positive & a step in the right direction by competing in the A Championship. Very disappointed with the level of support for the team on the day - even taking into account the fact that the game was in Wexford. Presentation of medals on Sunday night - only 20% of Players turned up. Puc Fada - 17th June in Cusack Park. Fé 21 Club Championship - confirmed as 15 a side only.
Michael McHugh reported from Coiste na nOg where he confirmed that the Leinster Minor Football Championship v Meath is on Saturday 6th July in Navan at 3.30pm. The Fr. Manning & Gerry Reilly Tournaments were discussed with all agreeing that present format should be maintained. Fixtures - Leagues finished - with outstanding games from Fé 14 down to be finished by 15th June with Minor & Fé16 to be finished by 30th June.
Both Pat Lynagh & Willie Murphy reported from Comhairle Laighean where in the
All Ireland Junior Club Championship Westmeath Club v winners of Kilkenny Club
Intermediate Championship.
Sub Committee set up to investigate border issue with Longford

Seamus Ó Faoláin reported from Ard Comhairle where he mentioned that their next meeting is on 15th June. Seamus requested from Delegates issues to be raised: (1) GPA - request that Irish Firms be considered rather than foreign - particularly with boots - (2) Mick Macken Castlepollard raised an issue surrounding Membership Cards & the fact that they will not be issued on grounds of cost - all present felt strongly that this should not be the case - Membership Cards should be made available. (3) Our photographer was refused entry onto pitch in Croke Park to take photo of the Iarmhí team participating in the Half Time Game. (4) Fr. Manning & Gerry Reilly Tournaments - will be discussed on 15th June.

Scór: No meeting but Catherine Daly requested all Clubs to attend meeting on Thursday 13th June in Cusack Park regarding the Irish Language Officer - in fact all the better if 2 or 3 could attend from each Club. Recent questionnaire sent out to Clubs - some replies back - but to encourage the remaining Clubs to fill in same
Handball: Robbie McCarthy reported - tournaments ongoing with underage training in Mullingar. Aoife McCarthy travelling to USA to partake in championships later in the Summer. 1 Ball Court Exhibition on 19th June in Penneys Carpark. Cathaoirleach requested the names of those on the Handball Committee.
Coaching & Games: Michael McHugh reported everything going according to plan. Schools - with Cumann na mBun Scol Finals finished - the focus is now switched to blitzes. The Iggy Fulham Tournament has taken place which involved all the Schools that he had coached in - with Milltown the winners on the day. New Initiative re Coaches 5 Clubs selected for same - will be up and running in the next few weeks.

Club Forum: Cathaoirleach thanked the Committee chaired by Ken Eades for their work in meeting with the Clubs - particularly the Grassroots. Report now to hand & Cathaoirleach requested that Clubs bring it home & read same.
AOB:
1 Tom Keegan Clonkill - raised the issue of passes for Players - particularly at Fé 21 - he felt the lack of support may have been due to this - pointed out that while there was agreement with GPA & GAA - regarding passes for Senior Players - nothing existed at any other level.
2 Ger Gately - Tyrrellspass raised the issue of a possible Review of Group Teams - same completed last year - new Committee would have to be set up.
3 The issue of Leinster Grants - raised by Brendan Shaw - advised re same
4 The recent Iarmhí v Carlow game & the delay in same - raised by Gerry Coyne - re the unfairness in particular to Players caused by having to postpone the game for 10 minutes - all present felt that this should not have happened - however it was Leinster Council & not Iarmhí who were responsible for all issues regarding sale of tickets & entry into ground - same to be raised by our Delegates to Leinster & Central Council.
