Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA Notes

January 22, 2012
Ladies presentation night a resounding success

There was a marvellous turnout for the presentation of medals to our ladies footballers in the Annebrook House Hotel, Mullingar last Saturday night.

Club chairman Ken Scally and vice-chairman Paul Daly were on hand to present three sets of medals to our 2008 and 2010 minor 'C' championship winners and to our 2011 intermediate champions, who are looking forward to re-joining the senior ranks this year. There was plenty of glitz and glamour as the 200 or present enjoyed a night that will be remembered fondly for some time to come.

Also feted were last year's intermediate winning management team members Aidan 'Jack' Reid, Mickey Kelly and John Horgan, while Bobby Kelly's vast contribution to the club was also recognised. All in all, the night was a resounding success and great credit must go to Aidan Reid, Sabrina Linnane-Jackson and the rest of the organising committee. A big thanks also to Bertie Dunne and his staff at the Annebrook House Hotel for their hospitality.

On a sad note, the tough economic climate has forced many of last year's team to emigrate, including team captain Niamh Durkan who, in an email read out by Sabrina Linnane-Jackson, expressed her disappointment and sadness at not being able to return from Australia for the function. Such are the times we live in.

County players

Our club is very proud to have Alan Fennell and David Keenan on the Westmeath senior football panel at present, and twins Paul and David Fennell on the county hurling panel. Alan and David played in Westmeath's challenge match win over Athlone IT last Sunday, while Paul and David Fennell enjoyed outstanding debuts for the hurlers in their terrific Walsh Cup victory over Offaly in Kinnegad.

In addition, Philip Kiernan was recently appointed to the Westmeath football management team and we wish him well in his new role.

Minor AGM

Kilbeggan/St. Joseph's underage club held their AGM in Mercy Secondary School last Friday night. There was one notable change to the executive which saw Garret Farrell elected as the club's new secretary in succession to Eugene Nannery, who left for Australia in October. Donal Fox and Michael Lynam were re-elected as chairman and treasurer respectively.
