Plunketts fume over white collar event

The St Oliver Plunkett's club has been left far from happy over the scheduling of the Westmeath fight-fest.

The white collaring boxing event takes place in the Mullingar Park Hotel on January 28th and will see some of the Westmeath footballers go head to head in the ring.

However, for the past two years, the Plunkett's club have held a similar event in the month of February and they stressed at a recent county board meeting their disappointment of the scheduling of the footballer's event.

"We were the first in the county to do so and without consultation, or by your leave, we now hear that a fundraising boxing night is being run with the full support of the county board," said St Oliver Plunkett's delegate Dr Liam Dalton.

"At a meeting last year, we were given assurances that this would not happen. It's very difficult; we're all fishing in the same pool and to say we're disappointed is an understatement.

"It's just not fair to our club. One of our county board's roles is to support clubs, and encourage clubs, and it's hard to see how this is doing that."

Football board secretary Liam Gavin stressed that the county board were under the impression that Oliver Plunkett's were not running the event this year and county board chairman Tom Farrell stated that all parties needed to work more closely next year.
