O'Byrne Shield: Wicklow goals sink students

January 16, 2012
Wicklow saw off Athlone IT with a 2-16 to 1-10 win after extra-time at Baltinglass to give manager Harry Murphy his first victory.

AIT lead at half time 0-5 to 1-4, Meath's Danny McGovern grabbed the visitors goal. The home side recieved a massive blow when they lost star man Leighton Glynn through injury.

Wicklow made a great start to the second half, Paddy Dalton, Nicky Mernagh and Joey Kelly (who had replaced Glynn) put them one point ahead.

The second half was nip and tuck right to the end. It looked as if the home side would hold on but a Levi Murphy point in injury time sent the game to extra time.

The game looked closed out by the first half of e-t after AIT were reduced to 14-men, Wicklow took full advantage of their extra man and two goals from Tony Hannon (penalty) and Paul Cronin turned the game on its head.
